Final changes

December 7, 2009

After getting feedback in class, I have decided to make some final adjustments and reprint. I took out the elevator shafts and resized the directory. Here are the results:

Oh, and I made an image of what the interactive version would look like:

Just imagine that you could rollover any level you wanted to see and it would appear just as Level 2 is here.

Audience Survey

November 4, 2009

i missed my small group meeting today in order to spend some time interviewing a dozen or more people on campus about the new rec center.i got some intriguing feedback, mostly helpful. however, as you will see below, some feedback was a little harder to interpret.

survey

Note to self: do not interview smartasses.

It was nice to talk to people around campus, they were all very friendly, and only one turned me down to fill out my survey!

I got a lot of unexpected information as well, including a person who is expecting to get a job at the new building, but had no idea where…

Luckily, I had already talked to the wonderful folks at the Outdoor Rec Office and was able to help him out.

In general, people had little knowledge of what the building was going to have inside of it, but plenty of them knew when it was going to open.

Not so surprisingly, no freshmen, grad students, or transfers knew ANYTHING about the building. The only people that seemed to really know what was going on are those few who work for PSU. My goal is to reach those who lack this information, and see if I can’t create a map that shows what the building has to offer that they can easily understand.

New Rec Center

October 27, 2009

I have decided to make an exploded 3D map of PSU’s new Rec Center. It is a large mixed-use building with 6 floors, learn more here.

As you can see, I spent my weekend doing some trial’n'error with illustrator:

Term Long = PSU wayfinding

an ugly example of a campus map

an ugly example of a campus map

My idea (for the moment) is to revitalize the existing wayfinding signage and maps that are currently used on campus.

I still haven’t documented all of the current signage, (or lack there-of.) In the interim, take a look at my visual inspiration on Flickr.

To properly reserach this project, my audience’s perceptual organization of campus will need to be recorded. I intend to interview their wayfinding experiences, focusing on do’s and don’ts of mapping and signage.
